New standard: Old ladders may stay

As of 1 January 2018, the transitional period for the new EU ladder norm DIN EN131 ends.
So far, both, the old and the new version have been valid. From the new year on only
the new version remains valid. One of the most important changesconcerns lean-to ladders higher than three meters.
They must in the future be equipped, for example, with a stabilising crossbar. With the beginning of the year 2018 manufacturers may only deliver ladders that comply with the new standard.
What happens to existing ladders?
Thomas Jacob, head of the work area “ladders, trestles and stationary work platforms” in the trade and logistics sector
(FBHL) gives an all-clear signal: "Stock levels in the trade sector which correspond to the old norm may
continue to be sold. " Also, there is no obligation for the users of old ladders in the commercial or
private sector to exchange these. Jacob, however, recommends the retrofitting of ladders over three meters in length with a crossbar: "That improves the stability significantly. " The expert also indicates that ladders in commercial use
must be regularly checked for proper condition.
